Hello guys! Christmas coming soon and the fact is that this period is a relatively magic-free one. So what you do when it’s hard to play paper magic? You don’t play magic at all? Nah! That’s not the right answer if you are an addict. Magic online is here for all of us to keep us company along with the Christmas turkey. So I am going to talk about a deck which is quite strong in a jund – boros – monored defined environment. These decks represent around 70% of the field in magic online. So the main board is tuned for them. To be honest I saw the idea in an article by Patrick Chapin and tested it and changed some of the cards that doesn’t seem to fit (many thanks to antonis fyssas for his help ). More test is required though and I’d like to hear the opinion of anyone who will give it a shot. So, here is the deck list:
Main deck
Creatures:
4x Knight of the White Orchid
3x Devout Lightcaster
4x Wall of Reverence
1x Kor Cartographer
3x Emeria Angel
4x Baneslayer Angel
Non creature spells:
2x Brave the Elements
4x Armillary Sphere
2x Oblivion Ring
2x Path to Exile
3x Ajani Vengeant
4x Burst Lightning
1x Martial Coup
Lands
3x Emeria, the Sky Ruin
3x Terramorphic Expanse
2x Mountain
11x Plains
4x Arid Mesa
Sideboard
2x Martial Coup
3x Day of Judgment
3x Celestial Purge
3x Word Queller
3x Luminarch Ascension
1x Oblivion Ring
Let’s talk about “why to play this card?” now:
Mainboard
Knight of the white Orchid:
An obvious choice I believe. You can’t play an almost mono white deck without this excellent card. Mana acceleration and a 2/2 first strike body for 2 mana consist a must play card.
Devout Lightcaster:
This creature is very nice one if you expect a metagame full of jund decks. Also it’s awesome against vampires, a deck not so popular but still a match that you will face from time to time. There is always the risk that Lightcaster will be nothing more that a 2/2 for 3 white mana, but given the popularity of jund, it is a chance I am more than willing to take.
Wall of Reverence:
Not much to say about an excellent blocker and a good way to earn your life points back. Very useful against monored, boros and jund. It also helps against any midrange or aggro creature based decks and blocks Sphinx of the Jwar Isle, which can be quite annoying if you don’t have a Banselayer in the field.
Kor Cartographer:
A creature like this seems like a questionable choice but it gives the extra boost you need to get to 7 plains and activate Emeria, the Sky Ruin. Also you get an extra token from Emeria Angel and a blocker (a chump one most of the times though).
Emeria Angel:
She is just awesome! She wins the game by herself if she sticks. With Knight of the White Orchid and Armillary Sphere you can assure that you’ll have a nice flow of lands so that she’ll generate a considerable amount of tokens. She just raised the deck to another level. A must!
Baneslayer Angel:
If anyone need any reasons to play this card….just read it.
Brave the Elements:
A good instant that can ruin jund’s strategy if casted at the right time.
Armillary Sphere:
The spine of this deck. Excellent card advantage, assures that you’ll have a very good flow of mana which will activate emeria land, take advantage of Emeria Angel ability, and allow you to play your Baneslayers and martial coup. It also negates Blighting. What else can you ask for?
Oblivion Ring:
You all know the versatility of this card. It can be useful against almost every deck.
Path to Exile:
Thought I wouldn’t like to cast it against jund early in game, it provides you with a way to remove hostile Baneslayer angel and other threats that you cant deal with.
Ajani Vengeant:
Life gaining, removal, and a mana deny ability. All of them can be very useful for certain situations.
Burst Lightning:
The main reason not to play monowhite. Very good spot removal and most importantly it removes the so annoying Malakir Bloodwitch. A need to play card.
Martial Coup:
A one of that can get you out of trouble if you get outnumbered.
Sideboard
Martial Coup:
It is a must if you facing a rock deck, like g/w/b or naya or anything else that plays a lot of big creatures.
Day of Judgment:
Same reasons as for coup.
Celestial Purge:
A side-in vs vampires, jund, monored.
Word Queller:
The only way to have a chance against mill decks is to side this guy in. Also good against control decks that try to hit you only with a few creatures, like Sphinx of Jwar Isle, which are hard to remove otherwise.
Luminarch Ascension:
Because control decks still exist, it’s a nice solution for them.
Oblivion Ring:
As I said, a very versatile card that can save your ass.
That’s it guys…I’d be happy to hear your opinion when you test the list.
Until next time,
Take care.

Nice deck Papasouzas... Only one objection... The Devout Lightcasters main(side perhaps?)... Purge Seems a lot more versatile.
ReplyDeletewhy Terramorphic Expanse and not MArsh Flats? With so much life gaining, fetch lands' drawback is irrelevant, while terramorphic's "come into play tapped" is not. I also agree with orgios that lightcaster should not be mainboard, especially now that some jund decks run rampant growth over leech. I have to test the deck to see about the other choises, but the deck looks solid. It's similar to the deck I ran when I reached the final of that PE :)!

Hohoho, Merry Christmas, little child (in greek: paidaki)
ReplyDeleteLightcaster should be sb!!
Lightcaster is surely a quastionable choice but for magic online enviroment is a mainboard card for sure. There are too many junds around to sideboard it. And as for terramorphic expanse...man you wanna get your mountain sometPimes. Thats why no marsh flat.
